Listen to this, "...and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest),the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap far off,..." (Joshua 3:15-16a RSV). Oh my gosh! Did you get that?
It doesn't say the ones carrying the ark charged in or were in the river up to their knees? Their feet "were dipped in the brink". God didn't wait until these guys were up to their chins before he launched what seemed to be a miracle. As soon as their toes touched the water, God went to work.
Our God is so great! As soon as we give him ANYTHING to work with, he goes full steam ahead. God is so great, he's willing to trade our microscopic step of faith for humongous trust in us.
But that's not all! This interpretation sounds like the ark carriers' feet were dipping into the water but maybe they weren't aware of what God was doing upstream yet. Well, that's kind of cool. Talk about trust and obedience.
Dear Reader, in my heart of hearts I believe God calls all of us to dip our feet in the brink of the water. He doesn't promise calm and soothing waters, sometimes they're downright turbulent. But, still he calls.
To tell you the truth, I don't know if I'd be brave enough to travel half way around the world with people I don't know to a place so different from my own. But I do know Mary has two little girls who will always know Mama did the brave thing because she loves Jesus and she loves others.
What waters is God calling you to? Is there a brave thing you're being nudged toward? (And don't worry, just because God calls everyone, he knows who needs to go to Kenya, and who doesn't.) Whatever your brave thing is, starting a new job, having another child, going to college, or Timbuktu, God will be with you all the way, AND NOTHING SURPRISES GOD.
Dear Reader, will you join us in praying for traveling mercies for Mary's trip and blessings as big as the ocean?
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging." (Psalm 46:1-3 NIV)
